James Swan - pencil on paper
This piece is a study of the portrait originally done by Gilbert Stuart of Colonel James Swan in 1795. Gilbert Stuart is most famous for his portraits of President George Washington, of which he painted said portrait many times over. This portrait of Colonel Swan has the same qualities that those portraits of Washington demonstrate: a superb control of brush strokes and color usage that almost allows the viewer to converse with the subject. I have several more reproductions of Stuart's work in mind, and this is the first of the series.
The drawing was completed with 2B and 6B pencils and measures 6 inches by 7 inches.
