Women's Exchange, Pinehurst, NC - pencil on paper

This is a drawing made for my very own mother who volunteers at this Women's Exchange in Pinehurst, NC. It is run by volunteers in and around Pinehurst, and they have a consingment shop up front, and a dining room where patrons my have lunches and desserts during the fall, winter, and spring. I took a few reference photographs for this in 2006 and had most of 2008 to pull the drawing together.

The size is about four times larger than I typically compose and hence, this drawing took about four times as long to get just right. Over the span of several sittings I had to be mindful of what got shaded how much, and to make sure that the details of the cabin did not get lost in the tall Carolina pines that surround this building. The sun was passing through all of those branches high overhead which made for the sun-dappled light that covers much of the foreground of the drawing.

The drawing was completed with 4H, 2B, and 6B pencils and measures 16 inches by 20 inches. It is not for sale, but prints are being investigated for this particular drawing, so please ask me about those if you are interested.
